Bruce Willis to appear in film version of gambling memoir Lay the Favorite
Lay The Favorite, the best-selling gambling memoir by Beth Raymer, is being turned into a film. Stephen Frears (Dangerous Liaisons, The Grifters) has signed on to direct, with Rebecca Hall (Vicky Cristina Barcelona) cast in Raymer’s role. Bruce Willis is reportedly scheduled to play one of the gamblers that introduces Raymer to the world of online sports betting in Curacao and Costa Rica. Justin Timberlake and Catherine Zeta Jones are also rumored to be up for roles. Clearly, this will be the most attractive sports book staff ever.
Raymer got an early introduction to the world of gambling. Her father was a serious gambler who used to send his seven-year-old daughter to study the greyhounds in their kennels before the races to determine which dogs were taking a crap — the theory being that a dog with less shit in him would run faster. Upon graduating college, Raymer became an in-home exotic dancer, then a Golden Gloves boxer, then a waitress, which is where she met professional gambler Douglas ‘Dink” Hemiowitz.
Raymer became a runner for Dink Inc., carrying whopping sums of cash around town in her backpack, paranoid that she’d leave it on the subway one day. Raymer is keen to dispel the public mythology that these sports betting gurus are gruff Mafia heavies. In reality, “they’re all Jewish kids who went to Stuyvesant … mathematically inclined, but their social skills are lacking.” Which must be why, once they got their pasty white selves to the Caribbean, they went a little nuts, eventually developing some “crazy kinds of STD’s.” Can’t wait to see Willis getting his dick swabbed by some fly by night Costa Rican doctor…
